[Examples, Twitter] Predictions 2012: #1 – On Twitter and Media
So let’s start with Prediction #1: Twitter will become a media company, and the only “free radical of scale” in our Internet ecosystem. . The former, well… Now, Twitter is an engineering-driven company, but its future rests in its ability to harness the attention of its consumers, then resell that attention to marketers. When Twitter rolled out its mostly-lauded new design late last year, it added a new section to all of our accounts.

The post Portrait of Twitter As A Young Media Company appeared first on John Battelle's Search Blog. Last year I predicted that Twitter would become a media company. So I’ll start with this: 2013 will be the year Twitter starts to create, curate, and co-create media experiences on top of its platform. I hinted at this in my brief coverage of Twitter’s Oscar Index (see Twitter’s Makin’ Media ), but allow me to put a bit more flesh on the bones.

101 Examples of Social Business ROI Blog Post A few years ago, I put together a list of social media marketing examples. The list contains 324 examples of brands putting social media to use and at that point in the social media industry’s evolution, it was the best of what was around (and still might be). But the truth is out there…and here are 101 examples of social business return on investment, roughly 60% revenue generation and 40% cost reduction.

However, a clear-enough picture emerged such that I might do some "thinking out loud" about where Twitter's ad platform is going. But if you read my post Twitter and the Ultimate Algorithm , you already knew that.

Without a doubt, Twitter has become a useful communications tool for everything from breaking news to emergency dispatches to business conversations. Most of us tend to use only a few of the features Twitter offers; just enough to do what we want to do. For example, I use Twitter daily, accessing it from HootSuite on the web or TweetDeck on mobile, and I just tweet, check my @ messages and DMs, peruse my stream, retweet a few tweets, then move on to something else.

I wrote the post quickly, but have been thinking about the signal to noise problem, and how solving it addresses Twitter's advertising scale issues, for a long, long time. Twitter is more than the sum of its 200 million tweets, it's also a massive consumer of the web itself. It's a very important signal, but it means that Twitter is, in essence, also a web search engine, a directory, and a massive discovery engine. The same is true of Twitter's semantic challenge/opportunity.

One way to measure the impact that you’re having on the Twitter-sphere would be to see how many people link to your service, product or blog. Unfortunately, due to Twitter’s 140-character limit, most URLs are shortened using a service like TinyURL , is.gd or bit.ly , so if you search for a URL using Twitter Search , you’ll miss out on many of the links.
