I heard Ben Foster speaking about Allstate’s efforts in social media at the recent Enterprise 2.0 I wanted to learn more abut their efforts and especially the social media adoption issues they faced and how they addressed them. I think the Allstate effort represents a best practice example of social media adoption and, at the same time, Ben acknowledged that these are new media and no one has all the answers so they are engaging in a lot of experimentation.

The post It’s Time For Facebook to Start Making Media appeared first on John Battelle's Search Blog. There’s only one company that can possibly spin media gold on Facebook. And that’s Facebook. Round and round and round goes the debate —  Facebook’s not a media company , Facebook’s not a traditional media company , Facebook’s a new kind of media company. And the “media experience” on the site blows.

[Blogs, Facebook] Google, Social, and Facebook: One Ring Does Not Rule Them All
When I read Google announcements like this one, An update to Google Social Search , I find myself wondering why Google doesn't just come out and say something like this: "We know social search is important, and we're working on it. However, we don't think the solution lies in working only with Facebook, because, to be honest, we think social media is bigger than one company, one platform, or one "social graph."

I was an early blogger and slow to get to Facebook but like it okay. Now I am an addict ( Concluding Twitter Week: Predictions on How Twitter Will Change Blogs in 2009 ). I use Facebook a lot less now that I have Twitter. But do we need another social media tool? I am a passive LinkedIn user. I made fun of Twitter for months (see Unending Growth? Like many of us who blog I have a lot of other sites which require a certain amount of maintenance. I’m referring especially to the many terrific posts which pop up daily in my subscription feeds to other blogs and websites. Other material I find and share during the day will arrive eventually in Friend Feed via Tumblr , Flickr , Vimeo , Facebook etc. In other words, I don’t send anything to Facebook automatically via Friend Feed.

It’s 9am on my birthday, and already, 65 people have posted birthday wishes on my Facebook wall. Sure, it’s just a simple act – some might argue it’s only slightly more social than a poke, but I disagree. Frankly, I think this is really what the social web is all about: using distributed cognition to truly enhance relationships. But what happens when our capacity for social relationships is no longer limited by our brain capacity?
